Answer cards / The Georgia check

Can the visit happen online?

Ask about Georgia rules before paying for an online visit. A remote visit and a first prescription are separate questions.

  • Which Georgia licence does the doctor hold?

As of September 28, 2026, a doctor outside Georgia who treats a person in Georgia needs a Georgia medical or telemedicine licence.

Ask for the name and licence number, then look up the record.

  • Does the first prescription need an exam in person?

As of September 28, 2026, Georgia’s medical board says a first prescription generally requires an exam in person.

The detailed prescribing rule allows exceptions, including some prescriptions within a valid doctor-patient relationship under Georgia’s telehealth law.

The board’s summary is from January 2024; the detailed prescribing rule was changed in August 2024 and includes exceptions the summary does not fully explain.

Georgia’s online-care rule also allows an exam using technology that works at least as well as an exam in person.

The rule does not say that every first video visit meets that test.

Ask the doctor to explain how the current rules fit your medicine and visit, and whether you need an exam in person before the first prescription. A promise that all video visits qualify does not answer that question.

  • Who answers if something goes wrong?

As of September 28, 2026, Georgia requires people providing online medical care to give their name, qualifications and emergency contact details.

They must also explain how to get urgent follow-up related to the treatment.

Ask for that plan in writing.

  • How does care continue in person?

As of September 28, 2026, Georgia’s online-care rule requires the person treating you to try to arrange an exam in person at least once a year.

This duty is on the person providing the online care; the rule requires efforts to arrange the exam, rather than saying every patient must complete it each year.

Ask who will arrange it, who would examine you and how the results would reach the person treating you online.
